FIFA 12 Formation

4-4-2

The classic formation of English teams and used by many around the world to be attacking and defensive. Rather than focusing on a creative player who can freely move about the pitch it is a more organised structure of defenders and midfielders moving as a line up and down the pitch. If creating custom tactics use Organised chance creation so the strikers stay as the threat.
Advantages- Solid and good for attack through the middle or on the wings. Fullbacks can support wingers. Two strikers.
Disadvantages- No designated defensive midfielder. Some midfielders might be set to low defence work rate and not defend.

4-5-1

With two CAMs this creates a christmas tree type attack. The sitting CM can hold with the right and left midfielders allowing the top three to create damage. Or the two wide players can push forward to cross. Try custom tactic set to Organised chance creation to keep the players in best positions.
Advantages- Packs midfield when defending but gives every option for attacking. Excellent with top attacking midfielders.
Disadvantages- Not good for direct play and long ball styles. More for patient build ups.

4-4-1

Almost same as 4-4-2 to use on FIFA. Tottenham used this last season playing Van der Vaart behind the striker. If you have a very creative forward who likes to dictate the game and roam around like Cantona famously did then this is the formation for you. Better for a passing team and less direct. Try attacking with Freeform chance creation.
Advantages- Solid and slightly more defensive than 4-4-2. The CF can be used to break up play or be the creative force.
Disadvantages- No designated defensive midfielder. Some midfielders might be set to low defence work rate and not defend.

4-1-2-1-2

Attacking and narrow meaning most chances are created through the middle. If you have a top CAM player he will be key to your success. Set custom tactics to Freeform chance creation to enable your CAM to influence the game and move around the pitch in attacks.
Advantages- Has the CDM and CAM for fast build up down the middle. CAM can link the two strikers playing 1-2s to slice through defences. The CDM gives great cover at the back.
Disadvantages- Slightly predictable as most attacks will be down the middle.

4-2-2-2

A creative formation designed for slick passing. Depending on the opponent strengths and weaknesses the CAMs can attack inside or outside working 1-2s round defenders and lobbed balls over the top. Use Organised chance creation to keep strikers up top.
Advantages- Very attacking with freedom for the CAMs to influence. Excellent for ball position and 1-2 passing.
Disadvantages- CAMs not naturally good wingers for crossing. Takes a while to get used to the positioning.
